Director of Audience Development

The Director of Audience Development is a multidisciplinary leadership role tasked with creating, overseeing and refining strategic growth plans for every platform used by Gear Patrol’s target audience. Success in the position begins and ends with answering essential questions such as: “what kind of content and services does our audience want?” and “how can we leverage paid and unpaid solutions to maximize results?” and ultimately, “how can we make Gear Patrol a household name for our readers?”

As such, qualified candidates must have a proven track record of expertise in at least several fields of digital media specialization including email newsletters, social media, SEO, web analytics, content creation and affiliate marketing. A strong sense of outward relationship building and business development are critical for this role. Candidates must also thrive while working independently as a liaison between large stakeholder groups including editorial, sales and creative, and understand that the foundation of their authority rests on their ability to drive results. The candidate will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer while working closely with other stakeholders including the Deputy Editor and Social Media Editor.

Build and implement the strategic plans for growing channels including email newsletters, news platforms like Apple News and Flipboard, Google News, search engines, social media platforms, direct content syndication partnerships, audio and voice platforms, etc.
Help spearhead SEO efforts by working alongside SEO experts and editorial stakeholders to maximize exposure to our content.
Continue to build and enhance our direct newsletter product offering.
Coordinate exclusive social media content across assigned platforms.
Develop and implement best practices for email database management.
Work alongside the social media creative team to build and launch new initiatives to grow followers and traffic from those channels.
Educate the editorial team on social and other publishing best practices that cater to our audience’s needs.
Work alongside the partnerships team to support advertiser campaigns through the effective use of SEM, email and social in order to help meet impression goals.
Nurture and develop editorial and direct brand partnerships that drive referral audience opportunities, link-building, and content syndication opportunities.
Manage an Audience Development budget to maximize audience growth.
Help to increase our understanding of our audience through surveys, polls and other data collection techniques.
Collaborate with editorial and analytics teams to ensure content meets traffic, engagement, and other critical key performance indicators.
Foster a culture focused on constant optimization informed by a cycle of testing, evaluation and improvement.
Monitor best practices and trends in audience development to ensure Gear Patrol remains a leader in the industry and complies with new standards.
Serve as the primary point of contact for all third-party email and audience extension vendors.
Serve as an ambassador for Gear Patrol while attending industry events, advertiser meetings, conferences, and trade shows.

At least 5+ years of experience in the fields of social media, community management, email newsletter management or search engine optimization, preferably in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented editorial environment for a news or lifestyle publication
At least 1 year of experience managing one or several direct reports
A proven track record for growing an digital media property’s online audience
Strong creative thinking skills based upon editorial and publishing principles
A strong sense of urgency
A keen ability to read and creatively interpret data into actionable communication and insights to share across our editorial and production team
Manage key internal and external partner relationships
Capable of facilitating and managing regular reports of tactical and high-level communication with other departments and executives
A proven track record for growing one or more audiences on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flipboard, Apple News, Email Newsletters, etc.
Expertise with email newsletter tools such as Campaign Monitor, Mailchimp, or HubSpot
Expertise with paid promotion solutions such as SEM, promoted tweets, Facebook boosting etc.
Expertise with social media publishing/scheduling tools such as Sprout, Buffer, etc.
Expertise with audience retention tools such as Piano, Sailthru, Sharethrough etc.
Experience with project management software such as ASANA, AirTable, CoSchedule, etc.
Experience with popular analytics platforms such as Google Analytics and
Experience with FCC and other legal restrictions related to personal data privacy
Strong writing and copy-editing skills
Familiarity with E-commerce platforms such as Shopify a plus
Familiarity with CSS, HTML and other web design tools is a plus
A highly organized, proactive, detail-oriented approach to work
The ability to work efficiently under pressure in sometimes ambiguous conditions and a positive attitude about constructive feedback
A solutions-first mindedness to projects, responsibilities, and challenges
BA in English, writing, journalism or equivalent experience
Keen ability to internally manage the balance of success metrics and prestige values
A love of products and service journalism
