I never thought I’d be in the digital marketing industry.
Growing up, I was interested in quantitative finance. I wanted to know all the financial models that will help me have an edge over the stock market. But I wasn’t based in New York, London, nor Hong Kong, so I diverted my attention to data-driven marketing instead. That’s what eventually led me to do brand management in Procter & Gamble.
The running joke when I was there was that I should have my own agency. In P&G, I was always micromanaging my agencies, badgering them about the “right” design strategy down to how much the percentage the opacity an image should have. I also wanted to know how these changes eventually linked to ROI – what the media plan’s reach looked like, how many leads the consumer insight was going to attract (as a % of reach), then how much sales the copywriting can close (as a % of leads). These details matter to me a lot.
