SEO is an exciting discipline, but it’s complicated and there aren’t many places you can go to learn the basics. SEMrush realized that there was a need for an in-depth training and certification course, so the SEMrush Academy was born!

They asked me to help with the lessons, so here I am to walk you through SEO, from the technical tactics through content and link building. Each section is broken down into smaller lessons, so each video is typically 3 to 5 minutes long. At the end of each section, there’s a quick quiz to test your knowledge.

So let’s jump right in!

Before we can talk about everything that makes up SEO, we’ve got to start with the basics – how the internet and search engines work.

Search Engine Basics

In this lesson learn how the internet works and how search engines work to find, organize, and rank content to help users find what they are looking for.

Technical SEO

Learn about the technical aspects that influence how search engines see your site. We'll cover HTTPS, site speed, robots.txt, sitemaps, URLs, redirecting URLs, duplicate content and canonical tags, structured data, site status codes, and how to view site elements and conduct a technical audit.

Link Signals

Learn what backlinks are and why they matter to your website and its rankings.

On-Page Signals

You can't do SEO without optimizing content on a site. On page content signals are one of the most weighted elements in Google's algorithm, so it's vital that you understand how to write and optimize site content.

SEO for Mobile

Mobile web use has absolutely exploded, with most sites now seeing more traffic from mobile devices than from desktop computers. Mobile SEO is vital if you want to be sure that you're visible to customers at the right time and place.

Other Ranking Signals

Links and content are incredibly important elements of SEO, but Google's algorithm uses over 200 factors when it indexes and ranks pages. It's important to have a full understanding of all of the signals that influence search rankings, so we'll cover the other factors in this lesson.

International SEO

If you're doing SEO on a website that serves international customers, things can be a bit more complicated. Some websites will include multiple languages, while others might create entire sites to target specific regions or countries. Learn how to optimize your site and content for different regions.

Local SEO

Many marketers don't realize that Google actually has a separate algorithm for local results, which means local SEO is different from traditional SEO. Google gets trillions of search queries to analyze, and it has determined that for certain types of searches, users need results that are nearby, even if they didn't include a geo-modifier in their search query. With Local SEO, you're optimizing a site to show up in searches in a particular geographic area.
